Overview: The client wanted to retain the bones of the home’s original Cape Cod construction but needed more space for both a growing family and the addition of a home office.
Challenge: JBS Architecture was tasked to afford the homeowners the functionality they needed for work and family by maximizing use of the existing structure and land space.
Solution: We successfully used the land and existing structure to augment functionality. First, we opened up rear yard open space and made it more usable by removing a rear entrance to the garage. In its place, we added a covered porch across the back of the house. In addition to reconstructing the garage to be front facing, we used it as a base for additional space and added two bedrooms above it. This increased the height of the house, essentially adding one-half story. For curb appeal and functionality, we designed a new bracketed portico. Cedar shakes complemented the resizing and enhanced the expanded cape’s overall appearance.
