Overview: Our clients wanted to update this historic carriage house which was part of the 1903 Bassett Estate and in present day was located close to a neighboring home which was originally the gardener’s cottage.
Challenge: Requirements of modern-day living had resulted in a previous replacement of the carriage house. Our forensic observation suggested that a wood-framed second floor had been added and covered with a stucco finish as was a parking area and a substandard garage with a family room above it. JBS Architecture was tasked to combine the best of both worlds, recreating the look and feel of the carriage house and at the same time accommodating contemporary needs.
Solution: We reconstructed the entire family room and garage and set the new garage lower to allow ample height and head room. We also widened the space to accommodate today’s modern autos. A two-story mudroom adjoins the garage and a family room sits above it. Our flat roof construction allowed for an open porch outside of the master bedroom suite which houses a door that provides access to the porch.
